CROATIAN SURPRISES AND DISCOVERIES

Alongside with the important historical architecture and famous works of art described in guide books, every traveller will come across some surprises and discoveries, and they constitute the experiences that will linger in your memory for a long, long time, perhaps just because they were so unexpected. And Croatia hides countless surprises. A discovery of yours can be in the shape of a little church on a hilltop in the middle of a plain (like the medieval church of St. Nicholas near Nin) or lost in a stone desert (another church of St. Nicholas on the island of Brae, also medieval). You could discover a convent on a tiny island on a lake or a miniature abandoned castle hidden in the trees and bushes (the village on the rock of Lubenice on the island Cres). Or, if you get a chance to fly over Klis, you will have a breathtaking view of the medieval fortress standing on the edge of a cliff, resembling a blade of a huge stone axe. The Klis fortress began as a much smaller building, as a stronghold for the ancient Illyrian tribe Damlantae. If you are interested in the history of this building, then before you log onto the PartyPoker site or do anything else, you should definitely look into booking a trip. The history continues, as the stronghold then became a castle used by royalty. Its final, and most high-profile role was as a large fortress, to be used in the Ottoman wars. So there is a lot to find out about around this area.
